How to Know Your Jamaica Blue Mountain® Coffee Is Real
Four things worth knowing about certification, blends, and provenance.
Not every coffee described as Blue Mountain comes entirely from Jamaica's protected growing region.
Some are blends containing genuine Jamaica Blue Mountain® coffee alongside beans from other origins. Others use similar language without clearly establishing where the coffee was grown.
For a coffee whose identity is so closely tied to its place of origin, that distinction matters.
Recognizing genuine Jamaica Blue Mountain® begins with understanding what the name means, how it is protected, and what distinguishes the authentic coffee from other products carrying similar descriptions.
1. Look for 100% Jamaica Blue Mountain®
The first thing to understand is what the name actually means.
Jamaica Blue Mountain® isn't simply a style of coffee or a description of beans grown at high altitude. It is a protected designation referring to coffee from a legally defined growing region in Jamaica's Blue Mountains.
To carry the protected name, coffee must come from that region and satisfy applicable quality requirements.
100% Jamaica Blue Mountain® is the clearest wording for coffee sourced entirely from this origin, without beans blended in from elsewhere. But a statement on the packaging is only a starting point. A claim of 100% should be supported by verifiable provenance.
That is where certification becomes important.
2. Understand the JACRA certification
One of the distinguishing features of Jamaica Blue Mountain® is the system established to protect its identity.
The Jamaica Agricultural Commodities Regulatory Authority (JACRA) oversees licensing, inspection, certification, and quality standards within Jamaica's coffee industry. Coffee Marks Limited, a JACRA subsidiary, owns the Jamaica Blue Mountain® trademark and administers its licensing and protection.
Before qualifying green coffee is exported under the protected name, it must meet requirements relating to origin and quality. These include assessments of bean size, moisture content, defects, and cup quality.
This framework helps ensure that coffee marketed as Jamaica Blue Mountain® meets the standards associated with its protected designation.

3. Understand the difference between a blend and the genuine origin
A Blue Mountain blend isn't necessarily counterfeit coffee. It's however a very different product.
Under Jamaica's 2018 regulations, coffee classified as Jamaica Blue Mountain Blend Coffee must contain at least 30% genuine Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee by weight.
The remaining portion may come from other origins.
A properly identified blend can be enjoyable in its own right. But it should not be mistaken for coffee sourced entirely from the protected region.
The wording makes an important difference.
| Label | What it means |
|---|---|
| 100% Jamaica Blue Mountain® | Coffee entirely from the protected origin, provided its provenance is genuine and verified |
| Jamaica Blue Mountain Blend | A mixture containing genuine Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee alongside beans from other origins |
| Blue Mountain Style | A description that does not, by itself, establish protected origin and may contain no Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee |
| Jamaica High Mountain Supreme® | A separate Jamaican coffee designation for qualifying coffee grown outside the Blue Mountain region |
| Jamaican Arabica | Arabica coffee from Jamaica, not necessarily from the protected Blue Mountain growing region |
One particularly important distinction is between a regulated Jamaica Blue Mountain blend and loosely marketed products that borrow the Blue Mountain name. The wording may look similar, but the coffee behind it can be quite different.
The question isn't whether a blend can be good coffee. It's whether the coffee accurately represents the origin being claimed.
4. Consider the price, but don't rely on it alone
Genuine Jamaica Blue Mountain® commands a premium for understandable reasons.
Its growing region is geographically limited, with much of the cultivation taking place on steep mountain terrain.
Coffee cherries are traditionally handpicked, and the subsequent processing, sorting, and grading require considerable care.
Production is limited, and longstanding international demand places further pressure on an already restricted supply.
These factors contribute to the price of genuine Jamaica Blue Mountain®.
An offering advertised as 100% Jamaica Blue Mountain® at a price dramatically lower than comparable authentic coffees deserves closer scrutiny.
It may be a blend, another classification of Jamaican coffee, or something whose origin isn't adequately established.
But price alone is not proof.
An expensive bag is not automatically authentic, just as an unusually attractive price does not conclusively establish that a product is misrepresented.
Worth Knowing
How can you tell if Jamaica Blue Mountain® coffee is real?
Look for clear identification of 100% Jamaica Blue Mountain® coffee, appropriate certification or trademark information, and a seller who can explain its sourcing and verification. The strongest assurance is documented provenance.
Is a Blue Mountain blend fake?
Not necessarily. A properly labeled blend may contain genuine Jamaica Blue Mountain® coffee alongside beans from other origins. Under Jamaica's 2018 regulations, Jamaica Blue Mountain Blend Coffee must contain at least 30% genuine Blue Mountain coffee by weight.
What does “Blue Mountain Style” mean?
It generally describes coffee marketed for its resemblance to Jamaica Blue Mountain® rather than establishing that it comes from the protected origin. It may contain no genuine Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee.
Who certifies Jamaica Blue Mountain® coffee?
The Jamaica Agricultural Commodities Regulatory Authority (JACRA) oversees the regulatory and certification framework. Coffee Marks Limited, its subsidiary, owns and administers the Jamaica Blue Mountain® trademark.
Why are there so many fakes?
Because the name sells. Jamaica Blue Mountain® coffee is famous, expensive, and in short supply, which makes it tempting to borrow the name without the coffee. Real Blue Mountain coffee is scarce, regulated, and never cheap.
An origin worth protecting
Jamaica Blue Mountain® has earned its reputation over generations, shaped by a remarkable landscape, the people who cultivate it, and the standards established to protect its identity.
Its limited production makes the genuine coffee a rare find. Understanding the distinctions behind its name makes discovering it all the more meaningful.
With Jamaica Blue Mountain®, knowing where the coffee comes from is part of understanding what makes it exceptional.
